What’s Labor Day About?

I’ve often wondered what Labor day was all about. It had to be more than just a 3 day weekend! So, here’s the meaning of Labor Day according to the U. S. Department of Labor:

The History of Labor Day

For other Labor Day information, visit our Labor Day 2009 page.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.

So there you have it – the history of Labor Day!
Happy Sunday, See you tomorrow!

Thursday and We’re Coming Home

Well Life just seems to suck sometimes but what can we do but have faith!

Jacob_stickstounge_out-300x225

Our little man (my Grandson) was hurt on Monday morning and had to be life-flighted to the Washington Children’s Hospital. It has been one hell of a week but Jacob is on his way home from the hospital and will be ok as far as things go right now. As with any accident with small kids they still need tending to.

So any way that’s the gist of the whole mess… The best part is he is going to be ok.
It will be nice to see things get back to normal 🙂

Thanks guys for the kind comments and emails We love you all!

BlogDumps Bloggers Upgrade is a Success

WHEW!

That was tedious! I was so scared about this upgrade! But Everything went well and if you followed me on Twitter while I was upgrading, you know even my computer survived!

I know there was a short blip in Functionality today, but hopefully no one saw it! Truth is it only lasted for about one minute LOL!

Updates and Changes Include (but are not limited to):

  • While the overall look of your dashboards has changed, it’s really a simple and efficient change. All the tabs that were across the top of your dashboard are now in the left side bar!
  • We’ve removed the help and ticketing system. Few bloggers used it and the help videos were really out of date, so we decided that it was best to avoid confusion and remove the whole sha-bang. If you need help all you have to do is ask! You can email us or leave comments on this blog, Trina’s Blog, or Wolfbernz’s Blog — remember we are here to help!
  • We’ve installed a Text Link Ads Plugin to help monetize your blogs. Read this article to learn how to use this Widget.
  • The Social Networking Plugin has been updated. You can now choose from tons of social networking sites for bookmarking link at the foot of your posts and pages. It’s easier than ever to Tweet your posts! Simply log into Twitter, then go to your blog and click the Twitter logo at the foot of your posts.
  • I installed a comments plugin so comments can subscribe to follow-up comments. You have to activate it in your comments
  • Another bookmarking plugin, WP-Greet Box – This plugin lets you show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on their referrer url. For example, when a Digg user clicks through from Digg, they will see a message reminding them to digg your post if they like it. Another example, when a visitor clicks through from Twitter, they will see a message suggesting them to twit the post and follow you on Twitter. You can also set a default greeting message for new visitors (not matching any referrer URLs) suggesting them to subscribe to your RSS feed. This too is a plug-in you must activate
  • STATS!!! We’ve installed a stats program for tracking the status of your blog! In the left sidebar of your dashboard, under “Dashboard” check out the “Blog Statistics” link. I’m looking for feedback on this one, so make sure you let me know if you like it!!

So, now it’s time for my glass of wine to finish the day! I know Wolfbernz mentioned the possibility of have the BlogDumps Video Contest details up tonight, but with the activity of today, we didn’t have enough time to make a proper plan of action for the contest. So stay tuned for the details, in the mean time, make sure to join BlogDumps Video and be ready to upload some videos, pictures and music!

Happy Saturday!

Finally Friday

Well after a long, humid, sticky week I am in need of some rest. I can’t wait to just sleep in tomorrow!
I hope all of you had a great week also. How was your week?

There is not much in the way of news around here we just seem to be humming along… I see there are a lot of new blogs on BlogDumps Bloggers, a big welcome to all that joined the community this week. I also noticed a lot of new bloggers that have submitted their blogs to the directory. I will be adding new blogs this weekend to the directory so make sure we can find your buttons. 🙂

I am thinking about having a video contest and a prize for the best or funniest video that is uploaded to BlogDumps Video… We should run the contest for some time to get a big response!

Let me know what you all think about it and help me come up with a good idea for this, I think it would be a blast. I guess the one that gets the most votes would win. We will have to figure out the details and the winner would get money for winning! Continue reading Finally Friday

My Other Job!

Ok, Hump day is over. I decided not to update yesterday’s “Its Hump Day Once Again!” post with pictures of the window replacements I installed this week, instead I decided to make a separate post with the pictures and tell you a bit about the job.

First and foremost, I have to tell you about the customer. This couple has been a regular customer of mine for years. They are older now – middle to late seventies – but they garden everyday. They have an awesome garden that they tend to religiously. The vegetable that have come from the garden have been awesome (they sometime have more than they can use and send me home with a bag of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and who knows what else!)

Over the years I’ve worked all over the house and every year we talk about their front porch. If we add a little more caulking and a fresh coat of paint, can they safely go another year without replacing the extra large windows on either side? Well, the heat and moisture this summer did the windows in and it was finally time to replace them. Here are some pictures:

Casement/Picture window before replacement with the top row of Cedar shingles removed.

Window on the right side of the porch. This is the new, low-e replacement window.

So, there you have it – Before and After! Just like the Home and Garden Show! LOL

Have a great evening!
Wolf

Hump Day Once Again!

It’s a much better day then it has been on the Eastern Shore!

I don’t know how she does it, but The Poop won Top Sites Tuesday! She’s awesome and deserves to win, she had such a crappy week I hope it gave her the glimmer of hope that this will be much better! Have a great day Poop!

On the flip side I am off to an old customer’s house… see I am in the construction business also. I don’t do as much as I used to, I pretty much only work for my old customers now. They are in their seventies and don’t know who to call so I can’t just leave ’em hanging… I mowed the lawn for one yesterday and was glad to do it… how could one not help someone who has supported my family for years!

I’ll try to take some photos and update the blog when I finish today!

It’s time to jam… I gotta go – remember this one? Continue reading Hump Day Once Again!
